Sleep studies are tests that able Dr. Mir Varquez and her staff to evaluate what happens to your body during sleep. The studies are performed to determine what is causing your sleep issues While you sleep we can gather important data from the following tests.
A polysomnographic study can be used to detect a multitude of sleep disorders. This test records several body functions during sleep, including brain activity, eye movement, oxygen, and carbon dioxide levels, heart rate and rhythm, breathing rate and rhythm, the flow of air through your mouth and nose, snoring, body muscle movements and chest, and abdomen movements
Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT)
If a multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) is being done, you will need to stay at the sleep lab for part of the following day. During an MSLT, you will take a series of scheduled naps beginning the morning after your overnight stay. The purpose is to see if the patient falls asleep during these short periods of time, how long it takes to fall asleep, and which stages of sleep the patient has during the intervals.
Between naps, you are encouraged to stay awake and move around. The amount of time it takes for you to fall asleep and the patterns of your sleep will be monitored using most of the same equipment used during the polysomnographic studies.
This test helps the Dr.Varquez differentiate between narcolepsy and other disorders of excessive somnolence.
Multiple Wake Test ( maintenance of wakefulness test) (MWT)
Though this test is rarely performed in some cases Dr. Mir Varquez and her staff can use it to assess the patient’s level of alertness. You will be asked to stay awake without taking a nap during the testing period. You will be monitored with most of the same equipment used during the Polysomnographic study.
A sleep disorder can affect your overall health, safety and quality of life. Sleep deprivation can affect your ability to drive safely and increase your risk of other health problems.
